Risk Manager (Onsite) | 1-Year Contract | Berkeley, CA | $90/hour

Our client, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) is seeking an experienced Risk Manager to support the Advanced Light Source Upgrade (ALS-U), a major scientific infrastructure project that will help shape the future of advanced scientific research.

This highly visible role will serve as the project's risk management leader, partnering with executive leadership, engineering teams, and project controls professionals to provide strategic risk insight, quantitative analysis, and decision support. The successful candidate will help guide risk-informed decision-making across project cost, schedule, technical performance, and contingency planning.

The ideal candidate combines strong quantitative risk analysis skills with experience leading formal project risk management processes for large capital projects. Success in this role requires the ability to facilitate risk workshops, challenge assumptions, and communicate complex risk information to technical teams and senior leadership.
 
  • Location: Berkeley, CA (primarily onsite)
  • Dates: August 17, 2026 – August 16, 2027, with possible extension
  • Pay Rate: $90/hour
  • Background Check: Required

Key Responsibilities
 
  • Lead project-wide risk management processes, governance, and reporting.
  • Facilitate risk workshops and maintain the project risk register.
  • Develop risk mitigation strategies and monitor risk exposure, ownership, and action items.
  • Perform quantitative cost and schedule risk analyses, including Monte Carlo simulations.
  • Partner with Project Controls to integrate risk data with schedules, estimates, forecasts, and contingency planning.
  • Prepare executive-level risk reports, presentations, and recommendations for project leadership.
  • Support continuous improvement of risk management tools, processes, and training.

Qualifications
 
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Construction Management, Project Management, Business, Economics, Statistics, or a related field.
  • 8+ years of experience in project risk management, project controls, or quantitative cost and schedule analysis supporting large capital projects.
  • Experience developing and maintaining formal risk management processes, including risk registers, risk workshops, mitigation planning, and management reporting.
  • Experience performing quantitative cost and schedule risk analysis, including risk modeling, contingency analysis, and Monte Carlo simulations.
  • Experience supporting large infrastructure, scientific, construction, aerospace, defense, utility, transportation, or other complex capital projects.
  • Experience with Oracle Primavera P6 and risk analysis tools such as Safran Risk Manager, Safran Risk, or similar platforms.
  • Strong communication, facilitation, and executive presentation skills, with the ability to challenge assumptions and translate complex risk information into actionable recommendations.
  • Experience supporting DOE national laboratories, federally funded projects, or EVMS environments is preferred.
  • PMP, PMI-RMP, AACE, or similar certification is preferred.
