Senior Electrical Engineer | Temporary | $72.25/hour | Berkeley
Join the Advanced Light Source Upgrade Project at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and support the electrical infrastructure behind a major scientific facility upgrade. This year-long, full-time assignment will contribute to the design, installation, integration, testing, and commissioning of cable plant and electrical systems, including AC distribution, cable routing, raceways, grounding, equipment installation, and technical documentation.

The Advanced Light Source Upgrade is a major modernization effort.  This role will help ensure that electrical and cable plant requirements are properly developed, documented, integrated, and implemented across the project.

PLEASE NOTE: This is an ONSITE role. Qualified candidates must be within a reasonable commute distance to Berkeley, California.
  • Location: Onsite @ Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory
  • Schedule: Full-time; Monday – Friday, standard business hours
  • Start: 09/01/2026
  • Assignment Length: One-year base period, with two additional one-year option periods

Senior Electrical Engineer Duties
  • Support the design and engineering of AC distribution, electrical equipment, cable distribution, cable routing, cable tray and raceway systems, grounding, and related electrical infrastructure.
  • Develop and maintain schematics, wiring diagrams, cable-routing plans, equipment and rack layouts, engineering specifications, interface documents, parts lists, bills of materials, and installation work instructions.
  • Evaluate cable-routing and cable tray or raceway solutions for project equipment and systems.
  • Select and evaluate electrical components and equipment based on technical requirements, reliability, maintainability, safety, and applicable standards.
  • Use CAD, 3D CAD, BIM, and electrical engineering tools to develop, review, and maintain designs.
  • Coordinate electrical and cabling interfaces with subsystem leads and other engineering disciplines.
  • Support installation planning, field evaluations, inspections, material requirements, procurement, and kitting activities.
  • Review contractor and subcontractor design and installation documentation, respond to field questions, and help verify compliance with approved designs.
  • Support system integration, testing, troubleshooting, and commissioning.
  • Prepare field markups, as-built information, design review records, engineering evaluations, and configuration-controlled documentation.
Senior Electrical Engineer Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field with 5+ years relevant experience
  • Experience with electrical, electronics, and facility-system design and implementation.
  • Experience developing and interpreting schematics, layouts, wiring diagrams, cable-routing plans, and bills of materials.
  • Advanced knowledge of NEC requirements and applicable electrical-safety standards, including NFPA 70 and NFPA 70E.
  • Experience using CAD software such as AutoCAD; 3D CAD software such as Revit
  • Ability to manage multiple assignments and meet project deadlines.
  • Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Engineer-in-Training certification or Professional Engineer license highly preferred
  • Experience in a research laboratory, national laboratory, particle accelerator, industrial facility, or Department of Energy environments.
